Campaign on the rights of woman survivors of violence and their children to access support and protection

• Checklist and Strategy Paper: How Accessible Is your service for women with disabilities?

9 August 2016 – The WAVE Step Up! Campaign is lobbying for improving access to services, with a goal of making support services for gender-based violence accessible for all women, including women with disabilities. Research demonstrates that women with disabilities are twice as likely to experience emotional or physical violence and three times more likely to experience sexual violence – therefore, women with disabilities have a great need for specialist support, and this support should be coordinated closely with other networks and organizations who work with women with disabilities.

The WAVE office has developed a strategy paper “Improving Access to Services by Women with Disabilities”, highlighting the issue more in depth and providing suggestions about what actions could be taken to improve access, as well as a Checklist “How Accessible is Your Service for Women with Disabilities?”, intended to be a quick guide for assessing how accessible a service is and to provide ideas on possible improvements.
